My Heart and Soul Song

I've known this for a while...but I felt the need to share: "The Warrior" is my heart and soul song. IZ MINE BITCH! none for you.
My name, Ajax, is- yes, the name of a cleaning solution (whatever you were thinking-it ain't funny)- the name of one of the best warriors in the Trojan War, so I feel like I have an eternal connection to this song. Foreva. And eva.
This video is also ridiculously phat; and may I direct your attention to Patty Smyth's funky-fresh hair, makeup and outfit above.

Marvelous! Plus, the semi-shittyness but still epic-ness reminds me of one of My Darling's videos...

Don't you think? Both are beautiful and phenomenal.

Friday Mixtape: March 19, 2010

Ah! I'm obsessed with this week's playlist! It's really good! OK, so first, and i think probably most important (but I love all my songs equally...) is "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You": I've given into the Heart spell. I tried to stay away, but pandora radio insisted that resistance is futile to Heart. Soo- ALL I WANT TO IS MAKE LOVE TO YOU! SAY YOU WILL! YOU WANT ME TOO! Ahhh... Best. Song. Ever. Is you seen the video? It's so epic! I guess I didn't want to hear Heart because, I don't know, I thought they were like folk. But I like folk. So I don't know why I was so against it, and anyway, they turned out to be like stadium rock. EXCELLENT!

So, the Runaways is coming out...today? This weekend? Idk, soon. When/if I see it, I'll probably post something, see what I come up wit. I really want to see it! At first I was like, "eh," but then i was like HELLZ YEAH! I think K-Stew can actually rock it. Anyway, so Joan Jett (everyone's hero), was on my mind.

RocĂo will be happy about track 3, we enjoy rocking out to this song together.

Skip track 4, "Into the Fray" by Earth Crisis, if you don't like hardcore, or if you ain't the mood for it (it's ok, a lot of times im not either). But you might like it. It's catchy! Earth Crisis is the straight edge, pro-animal, pro-environment group that you love.

Track 5, "Take Me On" by Aha, because... I really don't know why. It's catchy?

Another guilty pleasure: "Electric Hellfire" by Black Label Society. Sorry.
Then I realized we needed more pop so track 8 is Jeannie Ortega's "Crowded". This was the first song I actually had on my iPod, when I first bought an older one off my friend, it was the free download of the week! Ahem...Score! I already knew that song and loved it! Plus, one of my friends was in a situation similar to Jeannie's, so I reffered her to Jeannie. I just love medicore (or just unsucessful?) female pop stars...don't get me started on Paula DeAnda!

Track 9...'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry". Why? See track 5. Plus, go Amiee Mann!

I realized there was no hip hop so I was like, "I must fix this!". J.J. Fad (LOVE!) are like the opposite of Menajatwa they have really soft voices, it's weird, but they still sound really awesome.
Yeahhhhh...that's it.

Killing Us Softly 4!!

OMG! Killing Us Softly 4 is coming out this spring! Ah!! Here's the trailer:

I remember when I first met Jean, I was first becomming interested in feminism and checking out library books on the subject and I came across her book,
Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel, I didn't even know it was a feminist book, I just saw it and I thought, "damn! I'd like to learn all those freaky voodoo tricks they do to brainwash us!". Anyway, I read it and it blew my mind! Maybe I should post a summary for all those who haven't read it, but eh, basically you know, weird Jedi mind tricks, they define beauty: be perfect, skinny, etc and they define normality. But there's a lot of crazy shit too, like using pictures of dead or injured women and women who can't or won't speak and it gets a subliminal as just like just that Gap ad with the woman pulling the turtleneck over her mouth! So crazy! You should definitely read it! Jean Kilbourne was like one of the first people to like see that advertising was actually a harmful phenomenon that actually had an effect of people. She's so fucking cool.
I can't wait to watch the free full-length preview! EEEE!!! So excited!
I'm a feminism geek.

For All My eBay Addicts...

I am an eBay addict. I spend way beyond my means on random shit on eBay like music, instruments, and action figures, but especially on vintage clothing and accessories. Because it is my passion, I wanted to share some of my favorite eBay stores to blow my money at with you:

Project Runway Top Three (season 7 episode 8)

For this challenge the designers had to create a look based on one of the four natural elements (earth, fire, water, air).
This first look is Seth Aaron's, and his element was air. I know, I know, air? But his inspiration was wind blowing in the night, which I guess its creative, or he is just creative in coming up with ways to do the same thing all over again.

Maya's look was inspired by water. I don''t know. It's good I guess but why that color? The whole design is kind of boring so why not have it be that grey and then some green? Or just green? I don't know
Jonathon's look, inspired by air (or actually laughter, which I think is pretty creative) is a Christian Siriano (below) dress for spring. I don't know why the judges are such suckers for this little extention of fabric around the neck (below) that anyone who uses it automatically wins (Jonathon wins this challenge).
Jonathon

Christian Siriano (and Chris March of course)

You can always go to mylifetime.com for more on Project Runway, and here for Christian Siriano and here for Chris March.

Friday Mixtape time! Yay! You was excited- admit it! These songs were playing in my head all week! The first one, "Goodbye To You," by Patty Smyth (not to be confused with Patti Smith) is uber-addicting and was love-at-first-listen! You know I love PJ Harvey forever and "Kamikaze," seemed to be the song of the week. Then I was having a Run DMC flashback and remembered the cuteness of "Walk This Way," with Aerosmith (aw!). The song from Born in Flames was in my head...And "Shattered," is so catchy, so I listen to it all the time. And i enjoyed the Alice reference in the first verse of that song and "Under My Wheels," is always in my head- yesterday I completed an awesome drawing of Alice in that video and his sexy outfit that makes me really horny:

Alice is so beautiful....I love him. "Any Way You Want It," was by far the winner of song that was in my head the most this week....I was just sitting there, trying to concentrate-ANY WAY YOU WANT IT, THAT'S THE WAY YOU NEED IT- sorry. I know Raj will be mad at me for putting that on... Journey hater....oh well. Anyway- this is crazy- I was looking for this one Babes in Toyland song (Blue Belle), but then I saw the fucking weirdest shit ever- Babes in Toyland's cover of the Little Richard classic, "The Girl Can't Help It". WTF?? Whatever, I'm loving it. It's crazy phat! Finally, I'm addicted to "Are You Bad?" by Glitter Mini 9 (lolz.), and it actually makes sense because we three of Iconic Eggroll have a problem with people who are "goodies," and we were concerned that one of our potential romantic interests may be a goodie, so we were like "is he bahhh-ah-had?" (Not really.). So that's your fun last track. It should be therapeutic after hearing Babes in Toyland cover Little Richard. Happy Friday!

Seahorses. Lolz.

OK, so, I have a new-found obsession with seahorses. It ain't funny! Because whenever the subject of seahorses came up-which wierdly enough, it did- I enjoyed impressing people with my knowledge that seahorses live in monogamous relationships, make musical sounds while mating and can decieve each other. I learned this from reading Eating Animals by Jonathon Safran Foer (good book! review later?). Naturally, I craved more praise, so through extensive research (OK- five minutes on wikipedia and google images), I have learned more about these cuties, and guess the fuck what?! Imma tell you all of it, so you can impress people. Yay!

You probably know that the male seahorses have the babies (I love that! You so crazy, Seahorses!) but here's how it works: while mating, the female releases the egg into the male seahorse (in seahorse porn, they have money shots of female seahorses depositing the egg) and then he fertilizes it and gives birth to the little baby seahorse (above)! ...Aw!!
Seahorses have a long courtship period and they do this little dance thing, which usually lasts about 8 hours:

It's so cute!! Ah! I could watch seahorse videos all day! And they usually mate during the full moon !*Sigh* so romantic!
They have to eat almost constantly to live because they ain't have a stomach or teeth! And their eyes can move indepentently of each other! They use their tail basically as a hand, because they use it to hold on to things and....when they swim with friends/mates they link tails!! Aw!

Seahorses are also used in traditonal Chinese medicine (?) and "as many as 20 million seahorses are caught and sold for this purpose (!)". In Seri culture (of northwestern Mexico) the ledgend is that seahorses were humans who escaped their pursuers in to the sea, putting thier sandals in thier waistbelt.
Seahorses are so so cute! Actually, I'm really surprised that I like them, though, it's weird, I mean, I like animals but I'm not exactly Nature Boy, if you catch my drift... (and OK, that video had very little to do with the actual concept of being a "nature boy," but it's always a good time to listen to Bowie). And a lot of underwater creatures, frankly, freak me out. Imagine if you went swimming and you met with one of these creepers....OK, I was going to link to a picture of some type of really gross, scary fish, but....I got too scared and had to close the tab... Heh. I'm a wimp. I also kind of have a complex about fish because I once had a fish stuck in my bathing suit when I was a kid...but that's a story for another day. Anyway, you know what I mean there are a lot of really fucking ugly fish out there, but seahorses are different! They're like the Lisa Simpsons of the ocean.

They are really cute and sweet...Well... I'm sure most underwater animals are sweet...but....I don't know! Seahoreses are the cutest! Stop asking questions!

...BTW, that thing I said about seahorse porn wasn't true.

My Brief Take On The Oscars 2010

I have a love/hate relationship with the Oscars-ahem, Academy Awards. I'm either like "OMG! Biggest Night of The Year!!" or, "who fucking cares about the fucking Oscars anyway...those stupid rich bitches...". But right now I'm on an Oscar-high, so there won't but too much hatin' going on...maybe...we'll see.

It is a good nigh fashion-wise, it's fun to admire and criticize all the beautiful rich people's clothes. My problem is that it's usually not a night to stick it to the man: hardly any women wear pants-I love you, Jane Fonda (above, after party?) and btw, i love the cute belt and boy!- and the most you get out of the menz is like, a bow tie. Which I know I should support, but now they just remind me of this incident (serious, Chris? When you're apologizing you don't take any fashion risks, it just makes you look like a shitty car salesman). One of my dreams is to see a man wear a dress to Oscars (I'm sure it's happened...), but not have be that a big deal. I wish men would just wear dresses in general...Gah! Fuck you, gender roles!

For Best Actress, I was torn between Meryl Streep and Gabourey Sidibe. I thought, "Oh, win-win, two of my favorite actors". But secretly, I kind of wanted Gabby to win more (don't tell Meryl!!) because everyone knows that Meryl is the shit and I felt that Gabby needed to be recognized for her amazing acting, and plus everyone knows Meryl wouldn't win because the Academy loves fucking with her ("heeeyy, Meryl, you a great actor....maybe you'll get the award...SYKE!!! SUCKA!!!!"... and yes thats how the Academy speaks in my mind).
But seriously? Fuckin Sandra Bullock?? For being in White Man's Burden: The Movie??
Maybe they wanted to be all ironic because she won a Razzie and oh...that's so fucking funny....
The Razzies are always awkward when the winners show up because they try to laugh it off and the World is like..."it ain't funny. You suck". I mean, some people say like "oh, it's good they can make fun of themself," but it's like, they only do it to like save face, like Bush joking about invading Iraq, or Heidi Montag joking about her plastic surgery. Ok, making a bad movie is not as bad as wrongly starting a war, but you get the idea: it's kind of joking about things that you fucked up on, but not like a normal person fuck-up, a "make-a-really-really-shitty-movie-and-suck-billions-of-dollars-out-of-innocent-peoples'-wallets-just-so-I-don't-have-to-work" fuck-up. It's when people make jokes about hurting other peoples' lives that it kind of rubs me the wrong way, and Heidi Montag can do whatever she wants but she still is hurting people because she's promoting an unrealistic body standard for women. *Mini Feminist Rant*

My only thought as to why they didn't have Gabby win was maybe they ain't want to have Precious win everything, but Lee Daniels didn't win Best Director- Katherine Bigelow did, (YAY!) I was torn between the two...it was a trade off: the White Men Who Control Fucking Everything said, "black man, you have the presidency, white woman, you may have the Oscar (sorry, another feminist rant, but i cut it short).

Gabby Sidibe was the most badass of the night, she told Gerard Bulter she'd "hit that," photobombed Jake Gyllenhaal, and rocked it everywhere she went before and after-"it's like I'm Usher!" She said ("You know you blew up when the women rush your stands, try to touch your hands, like some screamin' Usher fans"). You are like Usher, girl.

And there was all that Lady Kanye shit. Lolz. But seriously people, learn. That mic ain't come for free, you gotta protect that shit! Don't just let people take it! As a parent (not really), I objected to Taylor Swift: what message is she sending our girls?! Just let people silence you? Hellz no! If I had children, I'd be like "if someone tries to take the microphone while you talkin, you say 'OH HELL NO, HEALLLL NO! You can fuckin' wait, punk! I'm speakin'!'".

Not that many suprises, Mo'Nique (Yay! Yay! Yay!) Jeff Bridges, The Hurt Locker, and not that much Avatar (weird)!!

There were a lot of other awards. But, as you can see, I didn't care about any of them. So... I'm done here.

"The Performance, Not the Politics"

Mo'Nique accepted the Best Supporting Actress award tonight.

Look at 0:04 she looks so unsurprised, Maggie Gyllenhaal looks happier than her. But anyway yay go Mo'Nique!

Oscars 2010! My Favorites and Not-So-Favorites

Favorites

Oh Meryl! I love you and I love your beautiful white dress! I love a crisp, clean white on the red carpet (do not love wedding dress-esque ones).

A little bit plain, but all in all I adore Kate Winslet's strapless metalic shift.

Gabourey Sidibe always looks fly!

OH MY GAWD! I love SJP's dress, it's so unexpected! And look at the back! (below)

Dear Nicole Richie: I love your dress and I love how your style has evolved, you go.

Love Susan Downey's dress but can't decide if her husband looks cute or just wierd (I assume cute...?)

When I am Helen Mirren's age, I hope I can and will dress like this. Look at those sheer sleeves! Bold!

You knew that Zoe Saldana was gonna wear a show stopper. And you were right. I don't hate it. I really don't. I think she was going for a funky, even questionable look. She's having fun!

Not-So-Favorites
Most of my not-so-favorites were just boring. Come on! You have like millions of dollars to spend on your look and access to like the best designers in the world! Take advantage!

Rachel McAdams: you disapoint me, you normally look amazing but tonight you leave me feeling underwhelmed. Thow on some sunglasses and save this dress for a day at the beach (but watch out for that train!)

Dear Mariah Carey's dress: You should be ashamed of yourself! You make Mariah look like a baby prostitute! And take note on how to to a leg slit properly without making it look like you were ripped in half!
Why the fug is Diane Kruger wearing that cupcake dress.

I don't know who you are but your dress is ugly.

Project Runway Top Three (season 7 episode 7)

For this challenge the contestants had to create an unconventional look from items they bought at a hardware store.
This first look is Mila's (can't you tell by the color blocking?) Now, I like it, and I understand that color blocking is her thing and everything and I know that the challenge was very difficult but come on Mila! You've been in the top three pretty much the whole competition! Just TRY to do something other than color blocking with a "mod" inspiration. PLEASE! You are a really good designer! You can do it! Moving on...
This is Jay's look, and I don't know about you but I find him very unpredictable in this competition, which could be a good or bad thing. Anyway, this is his look, which he made out of GARBAGE BAGS AND DUCT TAPE. I don't like the outfit that much but I, just like the judges, was floored that he could pull off a sophisticated, coherent look out of those materials. He won the challenge.
This is Maya's look, which I am totally impressed by. Heidi was right you could totally see that in a fashion magazine. Frankly, I think Maya should have won. Her look is stunning and I'm pretty sure every woman in the world wants that necklace. The only reason I can think of for why she didn't win is maybe because the jacket is too reminiscent of those Yves Saint Laurent cage boots (below).
Anyway, good show. If you want more info on Project Runway season 7 go here.

You Could Use a Little "My Fair Lady"

I know I could. It makes everything better.

Songs Stuck in My Head This Week

MusicPlaylistRingtones
Create a playlist at MixPod.com
STORY: "Shoplifting" was in my head all week, because
I had a The Slits relapse- you know the kind. "G-Shit"
because I love the Lady of Rage and she's always on
my mind. And "Feed My Frankenstein" because Alice
is my husband, so I'm always thinking about him....
it's love. Anyway, we were at a diner and we wanted
to play "Oops!...I Did It Again" because it had been
in all of our heads all week, but the jukebox was like
"*no*. Cher first." Even the laws of reality cannot hold
back Cher. So then our jukebox was blasting "Believe".
Really loudly. You don't stifle Cher.

Lesbian Plot in Desperate Housewives

This is so amazing! Desperate Housewives, one of my favorite shows, I must admit, has introduced a lesbian character, Robin Gallagher, played by Julie Benz. Robin is a stripper who Susan takes under her wing and... nevermind I will save my synopsis on Desperate Housewives for another time. At first, when I found out that Robin was a lesbian, I didn't think much of it, since there have been small lesbian roles on the show before, but then in last night's episode, The Chase, Julie Benz's character actually SLEEPS WITH Katherine Mayfair, A HOUSEWIFE! I cannot believe this! A female lead on a popular television show has GAY SEX! Yay!

New Study Shows Sexism

A new study by University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism shows that actresses had only 29.9% of the speaking parts in the top grossing films of 2007. 29.9%! Can you believe that?
